How a Jewish Supreme Court Justice Left His Mark on American Society

Professor Snyder will discuss Felix Frankfurter, the third Jewish Supreme Court Justice and a Zionist. Learn how Justice Frankfurter hired the first African American Law Clerk, outlawed racially segregated schools, fought for a Jewish state at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference and so much more.

Brad Snyder is a Professor of Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Constitutional History and Sports Law at the University of Wisconsin. Prior to teaching law, Professor Snyder worked as an associate at Williams & Connolly LLP. A graduate of Duke University and Yale Law School, he clerked for the Hon. Dorothy W. Nelson on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.Weisman will explore how Judaism in America went through dramatic shifts in rituals, beliefs, and doctrines in the 19th century as it struggled to adapt to an open, modern society.

Arrangements for Brad Snyder were through the Jewish Book Council that serves to promote the reading, writing, publication, distribution, and public awareness of books that reflect the rich variety of the Jewish experience.
