Discrimination and the Law; Judaism’s Approach to Kavod Habriyot
with Rabbi Philip Bazeley
After a litany of Supreme Court decisions this past spring, many of us have voiced concerns about the Jewish value of kavod habriyot. Kavod habriyot is the commandment to preserve human dignity. In fact, the rabbis had such concern for maintaining kavod habriyot that in the Talmud (Berakhot 19b) they teach that any rabbinic prohibition can be broken if that prohibition is broken in pursuit of preserving an individual’s dignity.
Join us as we discuss this important imperative and how, as Jews, it relates to us in terms of societal issues like systemic racism, preserving same-sex marriage rights, white privilege, and even sexuality and gender rights.
