Selichot: Preparing for The New Year
First we will view this award-winning film on the untold Black/Jewish story of the nation’s first organized interracial civil rights protest that is captured in Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round.
The film adds a missing chapter to civil rights history, telling the remarkable true story of the first time a white community (largely Jewish) joined a Black student-led civil rights protest. The interracial collaboration to integrate Washington DC’s Glen Echo Amusement Park during the summer of 1960 provoked Nazi counterprotests, made national headlines, and incubated ten of the first Freedom Riders, including Stokely Carmichael.
After the film we will have a special Havdalah & Selichot Service where we change our Torah covers over to their High Holy Day whites.
